best way to learn?

Post by koneko10593 »

okay, so i get the basics, but how can i become fluent in Toki Pona with no one around to help, and no audio lessons and such.

also, is there any chat place to go to that uses Toki Pona? (not Freenode, there aren't any users...)

I apologize in advance for not posting links for all of these, the forum only lets me post 4, you'll have to google some or look at the "external resources" section on my fan site: http://tokipona.net

There are only so many people that are competent in toki pona, so in part one has to follow where they happen to be. jan Jopi posts on toki lili, but not much elsewhere. jan Kute is on toki lili and the fourm. jan Ote, jan Ante, jan Josan are mostly only on the forum. jan Mato is all over the place except the irc chat. jan Kipo is regularly on toki lili, the forum and shapado. jan Sonja writes in her wiki, but almost no where else at the moment. jan Pije writes mostly to his website, but writes infrequently now-a-days.

The livejournal and yahoo mailing list are dead and closed respectively, but in the case of livejournal, there are several competent toki pona users that haven't move elsewhere.

There is a grand total of one podcast in toki pona, with about 3 episodes. It's broadcast from Russia and has one of the best toki pona songs performed to date, unless you prefer pichismo, who you can fine on youbute.

There is something happening somewhere on the net with toki pona everyday. The trick is finding where. I use RSS for the recent changes in the wiki, RSS to the recent changes in the wikia (tokipona.wikia.com) I also use google alerts and social mention to find out where new toki pona stuff pops up as it happens. For example, LaPingvino is a prolific toki pona writer, but is constantly switching from site to site, ditto jan Ape.

I think that tokilili and twitter are the best balance between being public, short, instant. Here is my quick page on twitter and toki lili using tp : http://tokipona.net/tp/Twitter.Aspx

There doesn't seem to be critical mass yet for in person or skype conference calls-- most reported in person toki pona events are at conferences of one sort or another.

Hi Koneko,
Welcome to toki pona!

Some suggestions: Keep a daily journal, in TP. Get a notebook, and every day, write about a half-page of text in TP. You don't have to create original prose or profound poetry, so any text will do. Describe your room, your surroundings, your family, your childhood, news stories of the day. Paraphrase or record from memory an example conversation from Pije's lessons. Write anything, but write every day.
Write in TP, on the first draft. Don't write your thoughts out in English, then translate from there. Instead, think out your sentence in English if you have to, then write a draft translation in TP. Reread you TP, and revise as necessary to polish it up. Eventually, you'll be able to think directly in TP.

Post your questions and writings on this forum for feedback.

There are 3 toki pona learning videos on YouTube along with text.

I could not find any dictionary on the Internet. Does anyone know URL (link) for complete Toki Pona dictionary?

This is a merger of the wiki and the classic jan Sonja/jan Pije lists:

http://tokipona.net/tp/ClassicWordList.aspx

Real lexicographers build dictionaries by searching the corpus. On the same site I have an online corpus search tool as well.

jan Kipo gets 2nd place for his dictionary--only 2nd place because he hasn't finished it.
http://tpnimi.blogspot.com/

And the real bulk of toki pona lexemes are phrases and proper modifiers you have to memorize
Akidave's wiki has a link to the google docs phrase list that jan Kipo compiled. https://aiki.pbworks.com/w/page/1594805/Toki-Pona

I've written most of a tp parser and it's on my to do list to bust the corpus into a list of all the noun phrases that have ever been written and create a dictionary, but the todo list is long and the day is short.
