言好!Toki pona written with Han characters.

Post by janU »

The toki pona classic word list: http://tokipona.net/tp/classicwordlist.aspx included a character/Japanese hiragana for each word. I noticed that there are a couple of mistakes, as well as a few characters which I think would have made more sense.

I mostly tried to stick with more historical and general characters which are not just used in Mandarin grammar, but are found across other dialects and in Japanese. I also had the idea to use the character for dragon as akesi.

If toki is 言 and pona is 好, toki pona would be 言好,this would mean the Chinese and Japanese terms for the toki pona language could be 言好语/言好語. Since Vietnamese and Korean were historically written in Han characters this would mean that Toki Pona could translate as ngôn háo in Vietnamese and 언호어 in Korean, I dont speak Korean or Viet so correct me if I am wrong.

Here are my suggestions. Please tell me any of your ideas, or ways you think of to improve this.

Just come across this post when Googling. This is awesome.

However I do spot a few words that are quite Mandarin and won't work in some dialects or Japanese. I suggest changing them to more archaic forms:
la 就->則
lon 在->于
lukin 看->視/見
musi 玩->戲/樂 (the latter makes "kalama musi" translated exactly into the correct Chinese/Japanese word "音樂")
ona 伊->其 (伊 is a Wu dialect word)
pana 給->予
seme 什->何 (although this is borrowed from Mandarin)

Some other personal preferences:
ike 壞->惡 (壞 only means "corrupted" not "bad" in archaic Chinese and modern Japanese)
kulupu 民->眾 (民 merely means "people". 眾 better describes "a collection of people")
sitelen 圖->畫/繪(圖 cannot be a verb, but the latter two can)

Thanks! I changed them, but kept 什 because "seme" was borrowed from Mandarin. Also changed tomo from 家 -> 室 because 室 means a room or house. 家 is closer to "home" or "family" than a physical building.

http://tokipona.net/tp/Compress.aspx is a tool to compress toki pona using different systems including hanzi and kanji. 家 is used for tomo in the sitelen Nijon (Japanese) system, & 穴 is used for sitelen Sonko (Chinese). according to their meanings either 室 or 家 would be appropriate for tomo. I personally use kanji because the particles a, e, o, la, li, & pi are easy to distinguish from the other words by writing them with hiragana: あ, え, お, ら, り and ぴ. The only modification being that la is written as 'ra' because Japanese doesn't have the letter L. It's also Possible to write words without a kanji (like words that are officially extinct despite some people using them anyway) such as monsuta (もんすた/モンスタ) in hiragana/katakana. That also applies to transliterated words like names. jan Seloki would be 人せりきusing hiragana or 人セロキ using katakana.
