Ok, I saw this somewhere I think, and I'm pretty sure it means 'what amount/how many':
jan pi mute seme li kama (as an example)
How many people are coming?
Or is this incorrect, or don't I need the 'pi'?
Thanks in advance

Without 'pi' it means "which multitude of people", so, yes you need 'pi'.
