About the usage of "kin"

Post by bronger »

While editing the German translation of http://bknight0.myweb.uga.edu/toki/lesson/lesson0.html, I had serious trouble with understanding how to use "kin" properly.

Is it a modifier or a conjunction? If it is a modifier, it should be after the word it's modifying. But this doesn't seem to be the case.

From http://bknight0.myweb.uga.edu/toki/lesson/lesson12.html:
mi tawa ma Elopa. -- I went to Europe.
pona! mi tawa kin. -- Cool! I went too.
If "kin" refers to "tawa", then the latter sentence is meant in the sense "[I ran, I walked, and] I went, too". But the speaker wants to express that also he himself went to Europe. Shouldn't this be "mi kin tawa" then?
mi mute o tawa. -- Let's go.
mi ken ala. mi moku kin. -- I can't. I'm still eating.

a! sina lukin ala lukin e ijo nasa ni? -- Whoa! Do you see that weird thing?
mi lukin kin e ona. -- I see it indeed.
This is as expected (by me, at least ;) ).

From http://rowa.giso.de/languages/toki-pona ... nglish.txt:
mi kin wile tawa tomo mi. :: I still want to go to my house.
Again, this seems to mean "I too want to go to my house" or "It's me indeed who wants to go to my house".
mi ken ala. mi kin moku. :: I can't. I'm still eating.
Dito. The last two examples suggest that "kin" refers to the following word.

Is there a definitive explanation? Thank you!

interestingly, the russian translationof his book is different:
mi tawa ma Elopa. -- Я еду в Европу.
pona! mi kin tawa ma Elopa. -- Отлично! Я тоже еду в Европу
i.e. the modified word is mi
but the remeining 2 examples are incorrect:
mi ken ala. mi kin moku. -- Я не могу. Я все еще ем.
mi kin lukin e ona. -- Я в самом деле видел её
probably when he wanted to stress the entire sentece he modified the subject, but to you (and to me) the right way is the modification of predicate. you could write what you think is correct, but make the note that there is another opinion, and explain why you disagree.
the paragraph about kin is very weak (as well as entire the book), so if you add some commenntaries it will be only better

I concur.

When kin modifies the entire sentence, it would either be post verb or in a la fragment. I prefer moving what can be moved to the la fragment when possible.

kin la mi tawa ma pi toki pona. Indeed, I went to Canada.
mi kin tawa ma pi toki pona. I, too, went to Canada.
mi tawa kin ma pi toki pona. I went to Canada, among other things (like maybe I flew over it).

This wouldn't be the first time a possible error has shown up the various forms of the lessons. (The "li pi" construction comes to mind) The tricky part is deciding what constitutes an error--since people can follow patently crazy rules in languages.

Okay, I will correct the passage in the translation. I will post a couple of other problematic things in the next days.

Unfortunately, this means that the Germans translation and the original will get out-of-sync more and more because I don't have the time to edit the original, too. It seems to be the only complete coverage of Toki Pona on the Internet. Wikipedia says that Sonya published TP in 2001 on the Net. Where is the original publication?

In the example, 'kin' is used to emphasize the entire sentence:
mi tawa = I went
(mi tawa) + kin = mi tawa, kin = (I went) + too

It's not an error, but in this case one is rather expected to say:
mi kin tawa = I+too went.

As jan Mato said, 'kin' for the entire sentence is more clear for some of us when used as the 'la' part.

this is what i like germany for: the profound approach.
in fact it says that first mentioning of tp has appeared in 2001. i am not sure we can find the originaltextbook of tp, we can only try to restore from the fragments preserved in the net, e.g. from this one:
Alexander E. Kirpichev wrote:kin òàêæå, äàæå, äåéñòâèòåëüíî, òîæå
the 4 words of damaged russian text mean
также - also
даже - even
действительно - really, indeed
тоже - also, too
compare with current version:
Sonja wrote:kin mod also, too, even, indeed (emphasizes the word(s) before it)
the difference is in parentheses: emphasizes the word(s) before it. probably this dfenition was suggested later and in 2002 Sonja had no clear concept of this, just also, even, too, indeed.
hope this will help you
PS
the post of Kirpichiov is of some historical interest. so, could somebody (e.g. jan Mato as the best IT specialist on forum) please tell me how to convert this text into cyrillic; it is so inconvenient to read

as it so much resembles similar construction in many european languages. the dark side is that this usage is contrary to the defenition of kin as modifier. to make it more compatible, should we try to emphasise the separator li instead, as it is the heart of tp sentence? like this
ona li kin tawa ma Kanata
if the subject is me or sina, the li sould be inserted to stress the entier sentence. in this case kin is probably unnecessary:
mi li wile sona e ijo nasa ni

Re: About the usage of "kin"

I am inclined to think that what the examples (and many others in the corpus) show is American English "sloppiness" (common usage that some professor or other fines fails to meet his/her standards of precision. I happen to be one of these professors (retired), by the way). There is in tp a similar problem with 'taso', mirroring (American?) English usage of "only," where "I only wanted to kiss her" has at least four interpretations, distinguished in speech by different sentential stresses, but left open in writing. And comes out in tp as 'mi wile taso ute e ona' which is clearly one interpretation (not the most likely to have been intended) but , in context, clearly has been meant for at least two others. So, to satisfy persnickety perfessers, we stick to the rules: 'kin' goes after the word stressed for adding to, confirming, or correcting previous statements -- and in front if the whole sentence is of that sort. Similarly 'taso' goes after the word whose exclusivity is proclaimed: 'mi taso li wile ute e ona' (jan ante li ala), 'mi wile taso ute e ona' (taso mi pali e ijo ala tawa ona) and so on.
