in tp only the subject could stay right before li. in japanese the addition of "-te" does not make subject, it makes adverb.
to express the present time, tp uses tenpo ni la

(verb-te+imasu/arimasu), it's japanese grammar, not toki pona. And in this situation it's not an adverb but a verb

i know. but the suggested construction "verb+li+lon" is not toki pona either
And in this situation it's not an adverb but a verb
iru/aru is a verb, but ***te (e.g. itte) is an adverb

Full sentence examples? And this is a post for the "people who want to change toki pona" forum.

It might be more productive to propose a toki pona/japanese hybrid than to get the community to adopt a Japanese-ism. There's about 3-5 reasonably well developed toki pona clones/toki pona derivatives documented on the net.

or in Chinese 正在
Probably your best bet would be to use lon as a modal.
"mi lon moku." -- I am eating. -- 我正在吃飯。
The problem is it will usually also read as a preposition--> "I am in/on the food"

The suggestion to stick with the established "tenpo ni la" is a good one. Most of the time in toki pona, present progressive is assumed anyway.
