I'm not sure 'pini' means "close" in just that sense. 'Jo (luka)' "clutch, grasp" seems clearer
Yes, Dudley does make a difference, but 'lukin e' would have helped even more.
Nothing excuses the next bit, but "find" is 'Kama lukin', the hoped-for upshot of alasa.

Why a non-Toki-Pona letter r is used in the name of the protagonist?
The English /ɹ/ is commonly transcripted into Toki Pona as w (e.g. ma Mewika). So, maybe, jan Awi Pota?

Oops. You're right of course. I tend to use /l/, but fell into just reading and not heeding details (I'm bad on transcription anyhow). Thanks for the catch.
