Computer related words

Post by Kuti »

Hello
As far toki pona is used over internet it could be nice to have idioms for internet and computer things.

https://files.pbworks.com/download/lErS ... essons.pdf
in this book there are
tomo pali = office
ilo musi = toy, thing used for entertainment
ilo pi sitelen tawa = TV
ilo sona = e.g. computer
ilo toki = telephone, online chat
lipu toki = document
supa pali = work desk
Can ilo musi be videogames ?
for chat i've read tomo toki too
for computer some says ilo nanpa
for keyboard can ilo luka or something is good ?

What idioms can we make for the following things ?

mouse : ilo utala /
monitor : ilo lukin /
internet : len pi ilo sona / kulupu /
forum : kulupu toki / sitelen mute pi jan mute
website : lipu / sitelen
keyboard : ilo sitelen (pi sitelen pi kalama lili) / ilo palisa / ilo pana /

Can ilo musi be videogames ? janMato: Yes
for chat i've read tomo toki too
for computer some says ilo nanpa janMato: ilo sona if calculation isn't salient
for keyboard can ilo luka or something is good ? janMato: Sounds like glasses or virtual reality goggles

mouse : ilo utala (since the mouse moves the arrow, which I supposed an archer would call and ilo utala or maybe a ilo palisa, also because mice are clicked/struck)
monitor : ilo lukin
internet : len pi ilo sona - fabric/net of computers
forum : ( kulupu toki ? ), maybe sitelen mute pi jan mute, since it's a type of collaborative document.
website : ( lipu = webpage ? ) sitelen is bit better since lipu is supposed to be something concrete and flat.
keyboard : ilo sitelen (pi sitelen pi kalama lili)
headphones : ilo kalama tawa nena kute.
microphone : ( ilo toki? / ilo kalama ? ) -- Definitely ilo kute. Microphones listen. ilo kalama doesn't indicate how the tool is related to sound, so I suppose it could be creating it or listening to it, but given that kute exist, ilo kute is clearer.
scanner : ( ilo pi pana e sitelen lon insa pi ilo sona ? ) -- ilo lukin pi lipu sitelen
printer : ( ilo (pi pana e) lipu ? ) -- OK, but it needs to be a complete sentence and then referenced later with anaphora. This is like "I saw an eclipse" mun li pimeja e suno. mi lukin e ni.
OS : nasin pi ilo sona.
files : linja pi nanpa pi ilo nanpa. String of number on a computer
hard drive : ( poki sona ? ). That works.
network : len
social network : len pi jan pona.
brb : mi tawa taso tenpo lili la mi kama. MTTTLLMK. Needs works.
afk : sina awen taso mi tawa tan ilo sona. SATMTTIS. Also needs some work.
nickname : nimi ante
link : lipu lupa. "A hole in the page" Imagine sci-fi worm holes.
menu : mute pi wile jan. a multitude of someone's desires
phone line : ilo kon pi toki jan - magical device of talking people.
moderator / operator : ( jan lawa ? ) I can't think of anything better here, unless one doesn't want to sound so ... leaderlike & bossy. It seems like a facilitator or moderator isn't so much dictating what happens as keeping the peace, coordinating, etc. maybe jan pi utala pini, or what ever the salient thing is they do.
video : sitelen tawa. Same as movies & TV
web tv / radio : sitelen tawa (tan ilo sona) / kalama musi (tan ilo sona)

Well, first of all, computer related words are very untokiponaish. But, facts on the ground being what they are, we may as well do them right (remember that I like creative over literal so long as it is understood).

Can ilo musi be videogames ? janMato: Yes no. ilo musi is a machine, a computer game is the running of a program on a machine: 'nasin (ilo) musi' or so
for chat i've read tomo toki too a tad calquish, but we don't seem to have a better word for a conceptually isolated area
for computer some says ilo nanpa janMato: ilo sona if calculation isn't salient
for keyboard can ilo luka or something is good ? janMato: Sounds like glasses or virtual reality goggles joke! 'ilo palisa' is also possible, as is 'ilo pana' "machine for entering"

mouse : ilo utala (since the mouse moves the arrow, which I supposed an archer would call an ilo utala or maybe a ilo palisa, also because mice are clicked/struck) nice, though it makes my conflict with the computer come into focus. see the possibilities for the keyboard as well.
monitor : ilo lukin perhaps overused, eg, for eyeglasses and spyglasses, though both those have clearer alternatives
internet : len pi ilo sona - fabric/net of computers Well, I don't like 'len' for "net(work)": the net is physically a transitive tree and conceptually jijimuge: everything directly connected to everything else. But even jijimuge is also called the Net of Indra, so the idion seems widespread -- but not obviously 'len'. 'kulupu' may be enough
forum : ( kulupu toki ? ), maybe sitelen mute pi jan mute, since it's a type of collaborative document.usage already established, see top of this page.
website : ( lipu = webpage ? ) sitelen is bit better since lipu is supposed to be something concrete and flat. a fine point. 'lipu' is calquish on the one hand and universal on the other -- see net
keyboard : ilo sitelen (pi sitelen pi kalama lili) are the letters that important -- much typed is not letters
headphones : ilo kalama tawa nena kute. surely 'ilo kute' or, if speakers still exist, 'ilo kute nena'
microphone : ( ilo toki? / ilo kalama ? ) -- Definitely ilo kute. Microphones listen. ilo kalama doesn't indicate how the tool is related to sound, so I suppose it could be creating it or listening to it, but given that kute exist, ilo kute is clearer. this is being technical at its most perverse. mics don't listen or hear, really, they aid speech and sound
scanner : ( ilo pi pana e sitelen lon insa pi ilo sona ? ) -- ilo lukin pi lipu sitelen first probably too long
printer : ( ilo (pi pana e) lipu ? ) -- OK, but it needs to be a complete sentence and then referenced later with anaphora. This is like "I saw an eclipse" mun li pimeja e suno. mi lukin e ni. can't have 'e' in an NP, so just 'ilo pi pana lipu', which sounds like a paper towel dispenser. Needs something about sitelen, but I am not sure how or where
OS : nasin pi ilo sona. this could be any program
files : linja pi nanpa pi ilo nanpa. String of number on a computer maybe sorta right physically, but misses the conceptual element: 'kulupu sitelen'
hard drive : ( poki sona ? ). That works.nice
network : len brrrp, see above
social network : len pi jan pona.
brb : mi tawa taso tenpo lili la mi kama. MTTTLLMK. Needs works. tenpo lili la mi kama sin
afk : sina awen taso mi tawa tan ilo sona. SATMTTIS. Also needs some work. mi weka tan [keyboard]
nickname : nimi ante
link : lipu lupa. "A hole in the page" Imagine sci-fi worm holes. clever, but it might be confused -- for those old enough to have dealt with it -- with the hole in the middle of discs, where all the crucial data was stored.
menu : mute pi wile jan. a multitude of someone's desires or just 'mute wile' a multitude of choices or eveb 'wile mute' many choices
phone line : ilo kon pi toki jan - magical device of talking people. I think the magic has gone out of phones. just what it say 'ilo toki weka'
moderator / operator : ( jan lawa ? ) I can't think of anything better here, unless one doesn't want to sound so ... leaderlike & bossy.

You know, it's pretty cool how you two hammer out problems like this. Have you guys thought about recording a tp podcast together or something? I think it would be pretty interesting and would help create an audio corpus. This is a bit off topic, but you guys should seriously consider it!

I thought about it, but podcasting is a order of a magnitude more work than just pounding on a keyboard. There was a Russian toki pona podcast that lasted about 3 episodes, incredibly high production quality and prolly the best song ever recorded in toki pona.

Why linja ?
unless one doesn't want to sound so ... leaderlike & bossy. It seems like a facilitator or moderator isn't so much dictating

Yes, conlanging in the comments. There is some of that in the canonical jan Sonja material (not necessarily computer related) as well. You can't get more esoteric than source material based on html comments.
