toki bolo'bolo

Post by janMato »

A 1983 Swiss utopian tract proposed a 30 world language with a utopian worldview to go with it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P.M._(author)

They have productive reduplication, interestingly to create abstractions, not intensifiers or plurals!

I searched to see if this language was developed any further and only learned that bolo'bolo means many pigs in one language.

It has a base word for drugs (unlike tp), death but no life (it does have way of life)--like tp, 1/3 of the vocabulary is things you have a right to.

Sadly, I can't find any description of how to form verbs in this language, so it is sadly stuck in the realm of incomplete crackpotlangs.

I think it wasn't designed as a language. The author needed some terms for his utopia, so he created some new words, a bunch of keywords. Then somewhere in the manifest he threw a loose idea that these words can be used by travellers for communicating their basic needs, and could be a basis for future language.
P.M., Bolo'Bolo wrote:Besides this small asa'pili (containing only about 30 words) there could be created a larger asa'pili for scientific exchange, international conventions, etc. It will be up to the planetary assembly to put up a dictionary and a grammar. Let's hope it will be easy.

That's hilarious! It would be even more fun though to have a galactic assembly and invite the Klingons, too.

What is up with crackpots and conlangs?

jan li nasa la jan li pali e toki sin tawa ni. jan li wile kama jan suli.

taso jan li pali e toki sin la jan ni ale li ala jan nasa.

prob. 'jan nasa ala'
Not all cranks make new languages, but a lot do, though their languages are usually pretty terrible. And, more importantly, not everyone who makes a new language is a crank. The cranks tend to be mainly in the auxlang realm, where the languages are meant to take over the world and turn it into a paradise of some sort. Of course, there have been cases of people making englangs, even artlangs, who were also cranks and smuggled in various notions (Loglan eventually, Laadan for immediate recall). But , if you look at the vast majority of the languages created every year that actually get published in some sense, most of them seem relatively program free and to be viewed either for PoohBahing a story or just as a free-standing aesthetic object (or to make a buck, of course, but that seems to come mainly under PoohBahing (Na'vi, Klingon, Dothraki,...)). And the crankness of the designer must always be distinguished from his/her paranoia about what the epigones are doing to his/her baby.

Has anybody figured out what Raj84 is about? Occasionally, his remarks seem almost relevant, but only occasionally. At least he doesn't seem to be selling anything.
