What stand will you take on the apocrypha? I probably won't do anything with 'pu' until we know more, since it is too much of a mystery. In English we have similarly gone with various transliterations of 北京 - Beijing, Peking, but then 紫禁城 is always translated "Forbidden City" or "Forbidden Palace".
