I don't know of any uses of it in the corpus since I got here and I suspect most people would not recognize it, or would reject, it if they did. It goes back to a time when 'pi' was only possessive, not a general grouping marker for modifiers.

Lon la. Taso mi wile e ante.

Pona! Tenpo ni mi sona e toki sina. O kon pi jan pi lon lipu li Kama tawa pon.

Pona mute. Mi sona ala e ona ali. Taso ona li pona.
Taso o weka e nimi 'pi' tan nimi 'kon pi lipu'. Sina wile Jo e nimi tu Lon monsi nimi 'pi'.

On the other hand, why is 'taso, and only 'taso' exempt from the need for 'la' in that role and position?

Don't need 'la' after 'taso'.
