Comparisons

The standard way to make a comparison in tp, "A is more x than B”, is with the two-sentence unit ‘A li x mute; B li x lili’. This approach fits nicely with certain aspects of tp: nothing like conjugations or declension, keep all setneces simple, and so on. But it is not pleasant for people from...

Re: Ideas for Phonology. Three vowel system.

Yes, ‘ken/kin’ has always stood in the way of three-vowel solutions -- pretty much all of them, since most seem to put /e/ and /i/ in the same group. The high-mid-low pattern doesn’t collapse /e/ and /i/, but it runs into ‘ken/kon’, as does the i-u-other pattern. ‘kin’ is mainly an artifical word so...

Re: Toki pona corpus project needs your help!

This looks like a valuable aid eventually. right now it has a lot of problems. A quick glance shows several bad definitions right away, enough to worry about the whole. For basic starters, the correct version of “a” is nothing; ‘wan’ would only be used to contrast with some other number or with ‘ant...

Re: First time here. A couple questions...

Sorry I missed the ‘pi tomo’ (wrong as Lope says). ‘anu’ sems exempt from all the restrictions there are on ‘en’. I don’t know why; all the practical reasons seem to apply to ‘anu’ as well (I tend to ignore the restrictions on ‘en’ except the one between sentences, but even that gets an occasional n...

Re: How do I speak Toki Pona

Lope’s grammar is rather stringent and occasionally a little odd. You might be advised to look at Pije’s and, fo course, the “official” book by Sonja Lang. Reading a lot from the corpus and the Facebook and Discord sites also helps.

Re: First time here. A couple questions...

Always a pleasant surprise to find myself agreeing with most of Lope’s remarks. Just a few modifications from community usage as opposed to Lope’s rather stringent requirements. ‘pi’ sets off any multi-word odifier, not just those composed o a noun+adjective (in partiular, prepositional phrases get ...

Re: Use "seme la" as a yes/no question marker

And also ‘ma anpa li kama kiwen lete’ and so on, so it isn’t a Y/N question form (but neither are the others, really). ‘taso’ is not followed by ‘la’ but stands alone as a conjunction, like ‘anu’ (but ‘anu’ doesn’t need a period, in spite of some usage) ‘anu seme’ comes at the very end of a sentence...

Re: Left and Right

tp is written from left to right, so “left” is ‘poka open’ and “right is ‘poka pini’. Something from tp culture, not borrowed from someone else, like a mapping convention. On the other hand, we are boreocentric about “north” (‘lete’) and “south” (‘seli’). “east” and “west” are from the sun, which ki...

How does your desire for Mexican food use a very large number? For what? (Wherdja get that one for bodhisattvas? Really long gone!)

Alas, more opaque than the number system before. Go step by step and component by component, explaining each.
