Re: toki!

Well, forest is ‘ma pi kasi suli’ so that was a slip, but I screwed up remembering that ‘anpa’ has that religious humility and surrender reading. So, not too bad all around (but not stunningly good either -- nice start).

Re: Genesis translation

There are several other translation of this, from various sources, which you might want to compare with yours. Good afternoon, My goal is to translate the first chapter of genesis into toki pona . Can you criticize these first eight verses? wan open la jan sewi li pali e sewi e telo. “earth” is usua...

Re: Ecclesiastes 1.10 + newbie questions

From the trends in the corpus, I would add ‘sama lukin waso’ “like a bird visually”, see the standards like ‘’pona lukin’ for “pretty”, etc. or ‘lete pilin’ for “feels cold” (to the touch). That change, except for the almost hard wired ‘pilin pona’ and ‘pilin ike’ are pretty standard in the corpus n...

Re: Ecclesiastes 1.10 + newbie questions

Yeah, ‘pu’ is English, not tp, for the book, but people keep using it anyhow. There is no rule in pu (I’m writing English) about commas and ‘la’, but Sonja does follow that rule in her half-dozen or so examples. The only problem is that she puts the comma on the wrong side, if she needs a comma at a...

Re: Ecclesiastes 1.10 + newbie questions

Looks pretty good to me. The ‘ona’ reference is grammatically tricky, since the ‘ni’ is inside a quote, not in the same sentence strictly, but I think it will work OK by context. It does in English, after all. As a fussbudget, I would put the ‘kin’ after ‘lon tenpo pini’ for “already," since th...

Re: Implied Verb Prepositions

The drive to make positional nouns into prepositions (in place of ‘lon --‘ generally) has aleays been present but has been resisted generally but the pressure is growing. I think that the prepositional uses are still considered errors, but occasionally just not notice. The case with the verb forms, ...

Re: Implied Verb Prepositions

It’s not clear where Lope gets the rule that only verb, nouns and adjectives can make predicates. But, in any case, items like 'mi tawa tomo’ “I go home” are common in the corpus and never said to be improper. So, it seems that prepositions can also be predicates. Items like ‘mi tawa, tawa tomo’ are...

Re: Implied Verb Prepositions

We had the “about” problem about (different one) a decade ago as part of the general problem that everything was being taken as direct object of ‘toki’: what was said, what it was about, who it was said to, and what language it was in. After considerable discussion back and forth, we were pretty muc...
